Double Glazing Or Triple Glazing – Which Should You Pick?

Window shopping down at your local shopping centre and peering through the glass at your favourite store is a heck of a lot less stressful than it can be window shopping for your home i.e. purchasing new windows to replace your existing windows.

Triple Glazing

You need to be convinced that any new windows you buy will sustain the character of your property whilst also keeping it sufficiently secure and thermally efficient.

To complicate matters further, you also nowadays have to choose between double glazed and triple glazed windows.

There’s no need to feel pressured by any of this though, not when we can give you important background on double and triple glazing.

Thermal performance

Household fuel bills continue to rise at an alarming yet, more so for those with windows incapable of retaining heat and keeping out the cold.

A U-Value tells you how effective a replacement window is at doing that – the lower the U-Value, the greater the quality of insulation offered.

Standard UPVC triple glazed windows have a U-Value of only 1.0 W/m²k which makes them 40% more thermally efficient than your typical A-rated windows. All double glazed windows available at Pennine have an energy rating of A+ as standard as that we believe is the minimum our customers deserve, despite it being way above the industry standard.

Soundproofing

You may have heard or read that triple glazing windows are great for keeping out noise from the home, ideal if you live near a busy road, airport or railway. That isn’t true of all triple glazed windows.

To have this sort of impact, a triple glazed window must contain glass panes and cavities of different thicknesses, but most triple glazed windows have identically sized panes and cavities, and subsequently don’t deliver the soundproofing qualities that some claim they do.

Security

An urge to improve home security could be your main motivation behind buying new windows and both double glazed and triple glazed windows will heighten it. We manufacture both products from UPVC and aluminium and these materials are notoriously tough and hard to break.

A multi-point locking mechanism is also affixed to these windows that even the most hardened thief would find difficult snapping open. They would also be left frustrated in any effort made to remove the glass from the outside of the building as we internally glaze them to prevent this from happening.

Cost

You will have to pay a little bit more for triple glazing in comparison to double glazing, but not as much as you may think. Don’t forget that your new windows will save you a lot of money in the long run through the energy savings you will make.

You could always book an appointment with Pennine if you’re still unsure whether to invest in double glazing or triple glazing. We can help give you more pointers.
