There’s Never Been A Better Time To Extend Your Home
Why do we say that? Read on to find out…
You may not know that the government has recently announced that their relaxation of the rules in relation to home extensions will now become permanent, making it a lot easier to extend houses in certain circumstances.
It was back in 2013 that the Conservatives decided to temporarily allow English householders to fit a single-storey extension of up to six metres to a terraced or semi-detached home, or eight metre long single-storey extension to a detached property without planning permission.
Why did they do that?
They did it to encourage more homeowners to extend their properties, and partly in response to the ever-growing housing crisis.
Over 11,000 people have done just that since the rules were relaxed, and now that those rules have been permanently enforced, that figure will only increase over the coming years.
How does it make my life easier?
You don’t have to submit a planning application for extensions that meet these limits and this avoids you having to wait weeks on end to find out whether your local authority has approved the extension or not.
The current cost of making a planning application in England is £206, so you will save a lot of money in that regard too.
Can I completely bypass my local council?
No.
They need to be informed of the building work so that they can notify your neighbours. This ‘Neighbour Consultation Scheme’ offers your neighbours a chance to raise any concerns or objections they have with the proposed extension.
When your local council receives any concerns or objections, they will assess them and rule if the construction of the single-storey extension can proceed.
